Midland College (MC) offers the community an opportunity to take a creative writing class from published author and MC English Professor Stacy Austin Egan. The course runs January 18-May 10 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30-10:50 am. Students may take the course as a graded college credit course, or community members may enroll for the course as a personal enrichment continuing education course. Students interested in college credit should visit the enrollment page on the MC website. “During the course, students will have opportunities to connect with people who have similar interests as we study various works of published short fiction and discuss how to create complex characters, vivid settings, interesting dialogue and compelling plots,” Egan said. “I will introduce students to new stories and authors, and we will discuss future careers in creative writing. Students will generate three of their own short stories and learn how to revise their work through instructor feedback in a positive and collaborative workshop environment. We will also discuss submission strategies for short fiction, and if there is interest, we can touch on genres like screenwriting and long form fiction (novellas/novels) as well as strategies for querying agents.”
Stacy Austin Egan
Stacy Austin Egan is originally from Austin, TX. In 2018 PANK books published her short book of fiction You Could Stop It Here, and in 2019 Eric Hoffer Book Awards presented Egan with honorable mention. Her stories have appeared or are forthcoming in American Short Fiction, The Hunger, december magazine and others. She is a recipient of a 2021 Tin House residency. In 2022, she was a Sewanee Writers’ Conference Tennessee Williams Scholar, and the Sustainable Arts Foundation named Egan as a finalist for a grant award. Stacy holds an M.F.A from McNeese State University and a B.A. from New York University. She has been teaching reading, writing and literature courses at MC since 2013.
