Cougars Start Strong in Spring Sports

34

Dell City ISD recently issued the following announcement.

The 2022 track and tennis seasons are underway, and the Dell City Cougars are off to a strong start.

In tennis, Cougars high-school competitors traveled Friday and Saturday (March 4 and 5) for the season's opening tournament – the Alpine Invitational. The boys' doubles combo of senior Esteban Morales and sophomore Luis Ayala performed well, taking third place in the meet. In girls' doubles, seniors Shania Vargas and sophomore Iris Ayala made it to the Consolation Final – and came up just short. And singles player Jasper Vargas, a Dell City junior, played two matches – the second a fierce back-and-forth that lasted an hour and a half, with Vargas ultimately losing 8-7.

The Cougar track teams traveled for the Van Horn Relays – with junior-high athletes competing on Thursday (March 3) and high-schoolers on Friday (March 4).

The junior-high team – two boys and five girls – was “outstanding” in Van Horn, Cougar Coach Joe Czubinski said.

The girls scored 95 points, to finish third out of seven teams. The sprint relay team – of Samanta Espinoza, Kinsey Tate, Nicole Martos and McKenna Crabb – took the bronze metal, and the same roster took second place – or silver – in the mile relay. Cougar girls dominated in the long jump – with Nicole Martos taking first, Kinsey Tate taking second and McKenna Crabb taking fourth. In the triple job, McKenna Crabb took second, Kinsey Tate took third and Samanta took seventh. Martos took second place in the 300-meter hurdles. Tate won first place in the 200-meter dash. And Crabb won first in the 400-meter dash.

On the junior-high boys side, Cougars Brandon Crabb and Axel Sotelo placed fifth out of eight teams – an impressive outing for just two athletes. Crabb took third in the 110-meter hurdles, fourth in the shot put and sixth in the long jump – and one first place in the 300-meter hurdles. Sotelo took fifth place in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash.

With the Alpine tennis tournament happening at the same time, the Cougars only had two athletes for the high-school relays in Van Horn – sophomore Reyes Espinoza and freshman Eli Tate. Espinoza took fourth in the 800-meter run and seventh in the 400-meter dash, and Tate jumped 32' 9¼” and finished seventh in the triple jump – just missing qualification for the final six. Both high-school athletes improved considerably from their previous outings – and Coach Ski said he is “looking forward to the next couple of weeks before district, so they can show how capable they are in track.”

“I'm very proud and happy with the effort and hard work all these track and tennis athletes have put in the last few weeks,” Coach Ski said, “and we are just going to get better.”

High-school tennis players next travel for the Fort Hancock Invitational, March 11-12. The Dell City high-school track team competes next on March 26, at the district meet in Van Horn, and the junior-high track team has its district meet in Van Horn April 2. Go Cougars!
