UT Permian Basin Women's Soccer has rounded out their coaching staff with the addition of Elmer Zelaya as assistant coach. Zelaya previously served as the Director of Operations at Southern Methodist for their men's program at the Division I level.
During his time at SMU, Zelaya helped the Mustangs win two American Athletic Conference regular season Championships and three tournament championships. In 2017, they reached the Sweet 16 as the program was named AAC Coaching Staff of the Year. The team made it as high as No. 5 in the country as they reached the Elite 8 in 2019.
He also served as a graduate assistant at Ohio Valley University with the men's and women's teams. While there the men won the Great Midwest Conference Championship and finished ranked No. 2 in Division II. The women's program reached the conference quarterfinals and set a program record of 3.54 GPA for the semester.
Zelaya has also coached various club and academy teams in the Dallas area since 2018. He holds a USSF National "D" License as well as United Soccer Coaches and Professional Football Scouts (PFSA) diplomas. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 2015 with a bachelors in sports studies and a minor in business administration. He resides in Odessa with his fiancée Miriam and daughter Camila.
