The Prairie View A&M (29-25 overall, 19-11 SWAC) baseball team finished the regular season as the No. 3 seed of the western division will ride the momentum of their last regular season game three win over Texas Southern into the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament in Birmingham, Ala.
"I am happy that we are getting back to our winning ways, of how we win, going into the tournament," said head baseball coach Auntwan Riggins. "I am looking forward to getting out on the field tomorrow to continue that."
The Panthers are set to kick off play in the double elimination tournament against the No. 2 eastern division team Florida A&M (26-28 overall, 19-11 SWAC) Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Regions Field.
Earlier in the season, the Panthers fell 13-7 to the Rattlers in the opening weekend at the Andre Dawson Tournament in New Orleans, La.
"FAMU is a team that you can't make mistakes with," Riggins said. "They will always capitalize on them (mistakes). FAMU is one of those throwback old school type of team., they do all the small things right, they will battle you at the plate, throw strikes, and stay in the game until you give them an opportunity to pull away. We will have to go out and play some discipline baseball and make the plays in order to have a chance to win against them."
The Panthers lineup currently features four players batting over .300, paced by junior Brayden Johnson with a .419 mark. Johnson leads the team with five home runs, 31 RBI's and has scored 41 runs with 62 hits. Seniors Zachary Trevino (.336) and Demarie' Smith (.330) along with Benjamin Ybarra (.323) round the Panthers top hitting leaders.
Trevino is second on the team in batting scoring 32 runs, 51 hits, and 36 RBI's. Smith is the third on the team with 58 hits, 52 runs scored, one home runs and 23 RBI's on the season.
