For a second consecutive year the Prairie View A&M Athletic program has been recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference, for winning the James Frank Commissioner's Cup Award. The Panthers also earned the C.D. Henry Award for the top men's program as well as the Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award representing the women's team honors.
"I think that this honor is a milestone that we can all be very proud of," exclaimed the Director of Athletics Dr. Donald R. Reed. "It's an honor that we swept all three trophies. The Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award, is special to us as it is named after one of our PV Legends (Track & Field Coach Barbara Jacket). We are excited for our student athletes, our athletic department and the University, as we are the first institution to earn all three of these awards under the new 12- member team league. So we are definitely excited about that."
"The competition was very stiff, and our student athletes stepped up to the occasion, stepped up to the challenge, and really did an exemplary job of competing at a very high level consistently throughout the year. Every component of our athletics department from sports medicine, sports information, equipment, facilities and athletic training contributes to this award."
Each year the Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the top institution based on the overall finishes in league sponsored sports, as well as the highest point totals at the conclusion of the athletic season. Prairie View A&M totaled 167 points to claim the James Frank Award.
The Panthers won eight SWAC championships this past athletic year, claiming league titles in the sports of Soccer (tournament), Football (Western Division Title), Bowling (regular season), Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field, Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field, and Softball. Jackson State (150 points) and Alabama State (146.5) claimed second and third place respectively.
"This showed that all our teams contributed across the board," Reed said. "It was a domino effect as it all started with soccer and continued on throughout the season. Every team contributed to the success of this accomplishment."
The Panthers won the C.D. Henry Award after accumulating 70 points on the men's side. This marked the third-consecutive year in which Prairie View A&M has claimed the male all-sports award. Jackson State (65 points) and Alabama State (62 points) finished in second a third place overall on the men's side. The Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award saw the Lady Panthers earning 97 points in the women's final standings.
