Two Generation’s Graduation: The Path to Success

8

El Paso Community College (EPCC), in partnership with AVANCE, Workforce Solutions Borderplex, and CREEED, have successfully launched the Parents and Child Education Program (PCEP) as a pipeline to postsecondary education and celebrated their first graduation from this program. Eighteen women graduated from this program and received a laptop to enforce their pathway to success.

"This graduation is more than just your regular celebration of the completion of a program. The mothers who participated in AVANCE to College have children ages 0-5 years and many other responsibilities, for many of them it was the first time they had stepped foot on a college campus and now not only are they further pursuing their education, but their children are also set on a path to success," Dr. Teresa Granillo, CEO of AVANCE Inc. said. “The number one predictor of a child's success in school is their mother's education level. The families who have participated in AVANCE to College are now on their way to increasing their economic mobility for generations to come!"

EPCC created a course for PCEP participants so that when they enroll for PCEP they become official EPCC students, allowing them to have access to EPCC facilities like the gym, campus parking, and other campus resources. Most importantly, becoming an EPCC student prior to enrolling in a credit-bearing course gives PCEP participants the opportunity to become familiar with campus and resources, this exposes them to the opportunities that lay ahead for them.

“While children learn skills to be school-ready, their parents learn to be college-ready at the same time," said Rose Galindo, EPCC Instructor. “Our two-generation approach offers families the opportunity to improve their lives and strengthen family bonds using proven tools, techniques, and technology."

AVANCE's Two-Generation approach consists of Parenting, Child-focused, and Parent-focused programs. Each of these areas is covered by our core PCEP and over 15 other complementary programs.

Established in 1973, AVANCE is a national, non-profit organization, primarily serving Texas, that creates pathways to economic mobility for predominately Latino families through high quality, culturally responsive, two-generation programming that ensures school readiness for young children and opportunities for parents to build social and economic capital.
