Texas Rowing's Sophia Calabrese, Lanie Nitsch and Rachel Rane were chosen to represent the United States at the 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Varese, Italy, USRowing announced on Monday.
Calabrese will row at two-seat in the Women's Quadruple Sculls (BW4x), while Nitsch and Rane will represent the U.S. in the Women's Eight (BW8+) with Nitsch rowing at seven-seat and Rane serving as the coxswain. The 2022 World Rowing U23 Championships is set to take place July 25-30.
"I'm really happy for and impressed by Sophia, Lanie and Rachel, especially since this was the first selection camp experience for each of them," said Texas head coach Dave O'Neill. "There's a lot to learn and adjustments to be made in that environment, and it's really exciting for them to be named to the U23 national team. They should be very proud."
The trio earned spots following the national team selection camps and join Kaitlin Knifton, Francesca Raggi, Anna Jensen, Caitlin Esse and Sue Holderness on the roster, who secured their spots in June at the Under 23 and Under 19 National Team Trials.
"With eight Texas rowers spread across four different boats, our program will be well represented on the USA squad," O'Neill said.
Rane coxed the Longhorns' First Varsity Eight boat that won national titles at both the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Championships at Nathan Benderson Park, securing team championships for Texas with each victory. Calabrese rowed at two-seat in the First Eight at the 2022 national regatta, while Nitsch rowed at five-seat in the Second Varsity Eight at the 2022 NCAA Championships and stroked the Four at the 2021 NCAA Championships.
Knifton, Raggi, Jensen and Esse will represent the U.S. in the Women's Four (BW4-) and Holderness will row in the Women's Pair (BW2-).
The World Rowing Under 23 Championship regatta is the premier event for rowers under the age of 23 and offers a total of 22 events. At the 2021 World Rowing Under 23 Championships held in Racice, Czech Republic, the U.S. won medals in seven events including gold in the women's eight, silver in the women's pair, women's four, and men's eight, and bronze in the lightweight women's pair, lightweight women's quadruple sculls, and men's four with coxswain.
