The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) named El Paso Community College (EPCC) as the 2022 Western Region Equity Award honoree. This award recognizes exemplary commitment by a governing board and president of an ACCT member two-year postsecondary institution board to achieve equity in the college's education programs and services and in the administration and delivery of those programs and services.
EPCC is nationally recognized for its long history of ensuring and preserving access to higher education and success for all students. The college has had demonstrable success in increasing access to education, maintaining a diverse group of employees and increasing graduation rates while promoting diversity and inclusivity.
Dr. William Serrata, EPCC President, credits the board of trustees with having commitment and a focus that promotes equity throughout the institution. “The EPCC Board of Trustees have continuously demonstrated leadership in setting policies that promote and enhance opportunities for diversity, equity and inclusion," Serrata said. “The Board of Trustees set the vision for equity and it is carried forth by our faculty, staff and administrators which is exemplified by our student success metrics."
The Board of Trustees' work to create an environment for students and employees that embraces a diverse community and world. Board Chair Brian Haggerty says it is an honor to receive the Western Region ACCT Equity Award. “By providing a high-quality education to all individuals, EPCC contributes to the advancement of a strong community and workforce," Haggerty said. “The Board of Trustees remains focused on equity and building even stronger pathways to graduation, transfer and the workforce for all students."
ACCT is a non-profit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical, and junior colleges in the United States and beyond. ACCT's awards program is designed to recognize and honor outstanding community college in a variety of areas, including equity. Regional Awardees are presented with their awards during the ACCT Leadership Congress, and then one awardee from each of the five categories is recognized with ACCT's Annual Award during the organization's annual congress in October.
