Mechanical Engineering Graduate Shares Her Story of Persistence

“Remain consistent and patient even when courses and study become more difficult,” Balderas said.Thalia Balderas graduated from UT Permian Basin in December of 2021 with her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. She said the College of Engineering opened her eyes to a successful future.

“The UTPB College of Engineering helped me succeed in my career by giving me the skill set and working knowledge to navigate myself in the engineering industry,” Balderas said. “With the broad range of study, I was able to keep an open mind to what my future career may hold.”

Balderas added the skill she learned at UTPB left her feeling confident to enter the workforce.

“The College of Engineering also gave me the tools to be confident in a professional setting,” Balderas said.

During Balderas’ time at UTPB, she juggled being an engineering student while on the cross-country team.

Balderas is now a mechanical engineer at Parkhill. She said her job combines many of the things she learned in the classroom.

“A day in my job consists of collaboration between other Engineers, Architects and professionals for projects in government, commercial and institutional sectors- including higher education, aviation,

infrastructure, transportation, healthcare and church facilities,” Balderas said. “My specific role is towards the HVAC industry, designing the ventilation system to fit an aesthetic and create sustainable and resilient environments.”

Balderas said she would encourage prospective and current students to be persistent with their studies.

“Remain consistent and patient even when courses and study become more difficult,” Balderas said. “Embrace the challenge and allow it to expand your limits of knowledge to be the best engineer you can be. With persistence everything will unfold as it should.”
