During the final stretch of the game the Prairie View A&M women's basketball team couldn't find the offense needed, dropping a 68-53 matchup to the University of Florida Gators, Wednesday night at Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
Senior Kennedy Paul led the Panthers with a season high 20 points, shooting 5-of-7 from around the arc and pulling down two boards. Graduate student Tamiracle Taylor joined Paul in double-digits scoring with season high of 17 points, in addition to three rebounds, and four steals. Graduate student Desiree Lewis was a defensive threat for the Panthers as shed pulled down a season high seven boards. Lewis also had a team and season high four assist.
The Gators opened the quarter up scoring first before PVAMU's Paul hit a jumper to make the score 3-2 in favor of UF. Florida went on a 20-3 run (24-7), closing the first quarter of play with a 26-18 lead as the Panthers chipped away at the 17-point deficit. UF extended their lead to double-digit figures to close out the half at 40-27.
The Panthers came out of the intermission again chipping away at their 13-point deficit as they found their way down to one-point at 44-43. PVAMU matched the Gators point-for-point going down the stretch. However, UF maintained the momentum netting seven unanswered points in the top of the fourth quarter. Lewis hit a layup to cut the lead back down to a single digit.
PVAMU began to struggle leaving 3:11 on the clock before hitting four consecutive free-throws, but it just wasn't enough as UF would maintain their advantage and take the 68-53 win.
The Panthers will take a week of before closing out their four-game road stretch against Tulsa on Dec. 8 at the Reynolds Center. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. CT.
