Renewable Energy Highlights End of Semester Projects
At the end of the semester, the El Paso Community College (EPCC) Renewable Energy students presented their final projects for 3 courses, Solar Fundamental, Fuel Cell and Alternative Renewable Energy, and AC/DC that demonstrate their comprehension, investigation, and application of the course content.
For the Solar Car Race Project in Solar Fundamentals, students built a solar powered car, which has the principles of transforming solar rays into electricity teaching students the potential to reduce contaminates to the planet. In the Wind Technology Project in Fuel Cell and Alternative Renewable Energy, students built a wind turbine that transforms wind energy into electricity teaching students how wind can be used within homes, farms, and industries to reduce the electricity bill using natural energy. In the AC/DC Circuits Project, students were tasked to use AC/DC circuits and were allowed to be creative with the project chosen teaching students various ways to learn how to provide maintenance to renewable energy sources.
“This program prepares student for the industry of the future," Jose Alvarenga, Renewable Energy Technology System Coordinator/Instructor said. “Everything will be green and we need to be ready for it. At EPCC we are preparing the workforce of the future."
“I started at EPCC back in 1996 while I was in the military coming and going. For the first time in so long I wake up every day knowing that I am building something different for a better future." James Riley said. James is a veteran and EPCC Renewable Energy Program student who came back to EPCC after getting two master's degrees. “EPCC has grown over the years, especially with this program, Renewable Energy. It blows my mind! I have no doubt that if you want to get a good education for a low cost, EPCC is the way to do it because compared to all universities out there, it is the BEST VALUE!"
EPCC Renewable Energy Technology trains students to install, operate, and repair solar PV systems. Graduates of this program will learn to perform diagnostic analysis; demonstrate an understanding of solar energy industry standards; and apply safety principles.
