It was not the result that the Panthers wanted when they opened the Coaches vs. Racism HBCU Roundball Classic on Saturday, December 17 at Delmar Stadium in an 81-76 loss to Montana.

The Panthers and the Grizs kept pace, with two ties in the first six minutes of the game.  The final knot came at 14-all with 14:26 on the clock.  The teams battled, until Montana used the three-ball going on a 17-2 run over a six-minute span giving them a 39-25 lead with 6:09 left in the first half.

PVAMU began to chip away at the deficit as much as possible, but neither teams scored in the final two minutes, before going into the break with the Grizs holding unto 43-34 lead going into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, the Panthers rallied back putting them in the drivers' seat for the first time since the first three minutes of the game taking a 59-57 lead.  While it seemed like the Panthers scoring spree had shifted the momentum of the game, PVAMU began to struggle to make shots over the next five minutes.  Montana got hot using a 17-1 run, while the Panthers tried to put together a rally in the last four minutes of the game, however the Grizs held off Prairie View to take the 81-76 win.

Both Hegel Augustin and Will Douglas led PVAMU with 21 points apiece. Augustin shot 8-for-14 from the field, including five three-pointers.  He also had four rebounds, and one assist.  On his return back to the hardwood after missing the last six games Yahuza Rasas chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals.  Nikkei Rutty added 10 points and a team high five rebounds.

Up next, the Panthers will hit the road, taking on the New Mexico Lobos, Tuesday, December 20 at 8 p.m.
