Panthers Close Out Non-Conference Action with Loss to Aggies
- Prairie View A&M men's basketball team worked hard and hung in throughout much of the game in an 86-66 loss to the Texas A&M Aggies Friday night in the Reed Arena, closing out their nonconference slate.
The Panthers will open the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference schedule with a home opener versus Grambling State on January 2 with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off time.
PVAMU was led by Will Douglas who scored 15 points on a 7-of-18 shooting. Both Jeremiah Gambrell and Yahuza Rasas scored 12 points in the contest. Hegel Augustin scored six points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Despite the effort given by the Panthers, Texas A&M had four players to reach double-figures in scoring, led by Tyrece Radford's 20 points. Wade Taylor scored 17 points and had four rebounds, Manny Obaseki came off the bench for the Aggies scoring 13 points. Henry Coleman, II scored 12 points, grabbing a leading six rebounds.
The Panthers would see a final tie at 16-16 before a 14-3 spurt would give the Aggies a 34-20 lead. PVAMU struggled over the last five minutes of the first half, with Texas A&M extending their lead with a commanding 53-32 start of the second half and led by 21 or more the rest of the way.
The Panthers shot 25-of-60 (41.7 percent) from the field for the game and hit 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from long range. PVAMU hit 8-of-10 (80.0 percent) of its free throws.
