With the UT Permian Basin Softball season just around the corner, new head coach Sam Mendez will have a pair of stars heading into the season.  On Tuesday the Lone Star Conference announced their Players to Watch List which included Julia Bumford and Destini Trahan.

Bumford had a big first year after transferring to UTPB, hitting a team-high .422, swatting eight home runs, and driving in 38 runs.  She also tied for the team lead with three triples and tied for second in doubles with seven.  Early in the season she had arguably the best day by a Falcon in school history, blasting four home runs, driving in 11, and scoring six times over the course of a doubleheader.

Trahan transformed into the team's ace last season, winning eight games and pitching to a 4.24 ERA in 119.0 innings.  Opposing hitters hit .050 points lower against her than they did any other Falcon pitcher.  Trahan had some big moments, including a 14-strikeout performance against the University of the Southwest and holding No. 1 UT Tyler to just one earned run over 5.0 innings.

The Falcons were picked to finish 14th as voted on by the league's coaches, sports information personnel, and members of the media.  The season begins February 4 in Silver City, New Mexico.  The Falcons begin the season at home on February 21 against Angelo State.  Tickets will be on sale at the gate with single game tickets available for $5.  Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
