Government Professor Aurora Martinez Borunda is examining current policies in the judicial system as part of the Humanities Collaborative to EPCC-UTEP. The work of the collaborative is funded by a grant by the Andrew Mellon Foundation. The overall goal of the Humanities Collaborative is to increase public awareness and understanding of the humanities, to strengthen humanities students' transfer to UTEP, and to enhance EPCC and UTEP humanities faculty collaboration.
Most of the population served at EPCC is Hispanic, first-generation, and low income. These predisposed labels affect the marginalization that occurs not only in the education system but also the judicial system. Our community needs to be aware of certain issues and stories to create reflective policies that help our community's families. This project investigates the relationship between current policies and the carceral system by interviewing leaders and members of society who have been affected. This project also examines former detainees' legal issues deal with regarding reintegration into family and society-at-large.
