EPCC Celebrates Black History Month

El Paso Community College (EPCC) will celebrate Black History Month (BHM) with its annual month of activities this February. This year's theme is Black Resistance. A Discussion Panel on Black Resistance will be held on February 15, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. through at the Valle Verde AST Building Foyer. Moderator: Shonique Tornes; Panelists: Adeni Janae, UTEP Music Major and Black El Paso Voice Editor, Reverend Beverly J. Mathis, NAMI Peer Instructor, El Paso HS & JROTC Alumna, and Marcus McCoy, Army Veteran/Activist, Black El Paso Voice Editor.

As part of the BHM Celebration, A Night of Jazz featuring jazz saxophonist Gil Del Bosque and pianist Ruben Gutierrez, also featuring soprano Kodaya Butler and baritone Dendre Wright, will be held at the Valle Verde AST Flexitorium on February 23, at 7:30 p.m. Also, Black Resistance in Music featuring jazz saxophonist Gil Del Bosque and pianist Billy Townes will be held at the Transmountain Café, on February 24, at 11:00 a.m.

“It's important for us to remember and appreciate the contributions and accomplishments that Black Americans have provided us for many, many years." Dr. Andrew Peña, EPCC Executive Director of Human Resources said. “As part of the Diversity and Inclusion Program here at the College, we fondly recognize this important month for the lasting contributions Black Americans have made, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. The diversity of students, faculty and staff and their important roles leads to a better community as a whole."

A BHM Read In will be held at Rio Grande Campus Room A119, on February 8, from noon to 1:00 p.m. All EPCC campus libraries will have displays and reading recommendations available for students and the general public.

EPCC Diversity and Inclusion Programs was honored with a County Resolution on January 30, and a City Proclamation on January 31 for its work with recognizing black accomplishments in the community. For information on all Black History Month activities, access epcc.edu/Services/Diversity.
