Prairie View A&M Holds Texas Southern off in 89-74 overtime win

-The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team held Texas Southern to just 17.4 percent from 3-point range in a 4-for-23 shooting performance on the way to an 89-74 victory against the Tigers on the road Saturday.

The Panthers (8-14, 4-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Hegel Augustin, who had 21 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Tekorian Smith tacked on 17 points and two steals and Ricky "Doc" Nelson chipped in as well with 15 points and three steals.

The Prairie View A&M defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 18 Texas Southern turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 25 points on the other end of the floor. Nelson's three steals led the way individually for the Panthers.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M started out the scoring by going on an 11-0 run to take an early lead with 16:05 left in the first half. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 34-28.

After intermission, Prairie View A&M kept the Tigers from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Kyle Harding's jumper, to even the score at 47 all with 6:21 to go in the contest. Neither team was able to finish the game in regulation and the contest headed to overtime tied at 57-57. Prairie View A&M capitalized on nine Texas Southern turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.

Prairie View A&M kept it close before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Harding's three, to seize an 81-72 lead with 2:13 to go in the period. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 89-74 win.

Game Notes

» The Panthers held the Tigers to only 36.8 percent shooting from the field.

» Prairie View A&M had a great day defensively, holding Texas Southern to 17 percent from beyond the arc on 23 attempts.
