Prairie View A&M gets 26 bench points in win over Mississippi Valley State
The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team got a 26-point performance from the bench on the way to a 67-65 win against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at home Monday.
The Panthers (11-17, 7-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Braden Bell, who had 17 points and seven rebounds. Hegel Augustin tacked on a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Will Douglas helped out with 14 points and six rebounds.
Led by Augustin's five offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 10-second chance points.
Prairie View A&M forced 19 Mississippi Valley State turnovers while committing 10 themselves in Monday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Yahuza Rasas' three steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.
How It Happened
After falling behind 32-26, Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run with 2:33 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Ricky Nelson, to tie the game at 32. The Panthers then proceeded to grab a 35-34 lead heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 35 points close to the basket.
Mississippi Valley State proceeded to take a 57-52 lead before Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run to seize a 59-57 lead with 7:40 to go in the contest. The Panthers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 67-65 win. Prairie View A&M got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 16 of its 32 total points.
