Baseball Gives the Toppers Fits in Series Opener
The UT Permian Basin baseball team continues to show resilience against the top half of the Lone Star Conference. Friday, the Falcons started their four game series against #19 St. Edward's University.
The Hilltoppers took a short lived lead in the top of the third inning when UTPB tied the game in the bottom half of the same inning with two runs of their own, making the score 2-2.
Neither team would score again until the sixth inning when St. Edward's put up three runs. UT Permian Basin answered back again with runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh inning leaving SEU with a narrow 5-4 advantage.
Late in the game the Falcons threatened with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning. UTPB got two runs on the board, but it was not enough to catch the Hilltoppers as St. Edward's takes game one 9-6.
Offensively, UTPB put up 10 hits, six runs all batted in. Leading the Falcons was Carson Johnson when he went 4 for 4 on the day. Brent Rigtrup had two hits, one was a double, two runs and an RBI. Cooper Ciesielski also had a double.
On the mound, UTPB had nine strikeouts led by Trevor Barth who had five in five innings. Trey Penny struck out two in 1.1 innings.
Games two and three will be on Food Truck Saturday afternoon at Roden Field. The first game is scheduled to start at noon.
