The Sul Ross State baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Texas at Dallas Comets on Saturday afternoon at the UTD Baseball Field.
Sul Ross trailed 7-3 in Game 1 before rallying for six runs in the top of the seventh to secure the 9-7 win.
In Game 2, the Comets came alive on offense to win, 17-3.
>> GAME 1:
After four straight scoreless innings the Lobos got on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI double to right center by Aaron Morales.
Estevan Ortiz and Primo Vasquez then drove in a pair of runs with two sacrifice flies to center and right.
The big rally in the seventh started off with a leadoff single by Alvaro Hernandez. Peyten Kennard then drew a four-pitch walk.
Morales singled to load up the bases for Ortiz who was hit by a pitch.
Vasquez then drew a four-pitch walk while Orlando Moreno drove in a run with a fielder's choice which made the score 7-6.
Matthew Wheeler brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game.
Carsen Thor and Tye Lindsey delivered back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Lobos a two-run lead.
Morales finished 2 for 3 with a single, a double and an RBI while Thor went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
Lindsey and Hernandez each went 1 for 3.
The Lobos had six hits compared to the nine for the Comets.
Aiden Becker earned his first win of the season after throwing two innings allowing two hits and one earned run with one strikeout.
Ian Craigie picked up his third save after pitching a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout.
>> GAME 2:
The Lobos trailed 4-0 heading into the top of the sixth when Morales began the inning with a double which led to a two-run home run by Thor.
UT-Dallas used an 11-run seventh to pull away for the victory.
Sul Ross pounded out 11 hits.
Jared Roiz finished 2 for 4 with two singles. Thor hit his fourth home run of the season to go 1 for 4.
Morales ended up going 1 for 2 with a double. Morales now has 20 hits on the year.
Lindsey went 1 for 3 with a single as he leads the Lobos with 22 hits and a .400 average.
Lee Kubosh and Wheeler each went 1 for 4 with a single. Hernandez drew a walk and tallied a single to go 1 for 3.
Mateo Saenz singled in the fifth to go 1 for 3. Corbin Dube had a pinch-hit single in the ninth to finish 1 for 1.
Ortiz ended up going 1 for 2 with a single.
Gage Cobb suffered his first loss of the season after allowing two earned runs on five hits in three innings of work.
Cade Watson, Derek Rojo, Jacob Salinas and Dean Foley all came in for relief.
Foley allowed one hit in one inning. Rojo didn't allow a single hit in 1/3 of an inning.
