The award-winning Historic Alpine Ghost Tours are back April 13-15.

Now in the fourth season, the historic walking tours are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. and will include a “spooky cocktail” courtesy of Reata Alpine.

In June 2022, the publishers of Austin Monthly, San Antonio Magazine and Texas Music magazine announced the Texas Travel Awards, and the collaboration between the Alpine Historical Association and the Sul Ross State University Theatre Department won for best “Under the Radar Activity — Small Market.”

Tickets can be purchased at alpineghosttours.com. Admission is $20 for adults and $18 for children 12 and under, seniors and college students with valid ID. Money raised helps to fund theatre scholarships at SRSU. Guests are encouraged to wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes for the one-mile walk. The tours are recommended for ages 8 and up.

The tour starts at the famous Reata restaurant with a spooky cocktail and stars several famous Texans including Crystal Holland, who was murdered in front of the Historic Holland Hotel in 1916, and Harvey Hughes, who was hanged on the lawn of the Brewster County Courthouse in 1923, one of the last in Texas. It ends with a complimentary nightcap at The Century Bar & Grill inside the Holland, one of four Far West Texas hotels designed by the legendary Henry C. Trost. Others include the Gage Hotel in Marathon, the Paisano Hotel in Marfa and El Capitan in Van Horn.

“The tours are intended to promote the rich history of Alpine while also enjoying some ghost stories from the Big Bend region,” said Marjie Scott, writer, director and chair of the Sul Ross Department of Visual and Performing Arts. “And there may be some actual ghost sightings too.”

Bret Scott, an associate professor of Communication, leads the tour. Scott is a director and editor, and spent a decade performing and writing for Second City in Chicago.
