Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD schools Education: 7 American Indian students were enrolled in schools in 2022-23 school year

There were seven American Indian students enrolled in Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 12.5% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD schools welcomed 2,776 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, American Indian students comprised 0.3% of the student body to be one of the least represented ethnicities in the district.

Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD roughly covers schools within Reeves County and has a main office in Pecos.

Among the five schools in Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD schools, Crockett Middle School recorded the highest enrollment of American Indian students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of four students.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

"The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students... dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools... gun violence, and mental health issues," claimed the Texas Almanac.
