Rep. Tony Gonzales, a U.S. Congressman and military veteran, used his social media account on October 15 and 16, 2025, to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and local law enforcement funding.
On October 15, Gonzales posted about the impact of government shutdowns on military personnel: “As a military veteran, I know what it’s like to go through a shutdown without pay. Thanks to President Trump for agreeing to ensure our troops don’t go without a check during the Schumer shutdown. Now we need Senate Dems to vote, re-open our government, & stop playing politics.”
Later that day, he addressed the legislative process leading up to the shutdown: “It’s simple math: House Republicans passed a CLEAN, no gimmicks, funding bill to keep the government open. Senate Democrats voted against that same bill several times because they chose to play politics with this issue. That’s why we are in a shutdown.”
On October 16, Gonzales highlighted federal support for local policing efforts in El Paso: “#ICYMI: The El Paso Police Department was awarded a $2.5 million grant to hire 18 new officers to reduce response times & improve public safety. Through my seat on @HouseAppropsGOP & working with the @TheJusticeDept , I’ve been a firm ally of the COPS grant program.”
Gonzales represents Texas’s 23rd congressional district and has secured multiple electoral victories since first being elected in 2020. He won re-election in both 2022 and 2024 by significant margins over his Democratic challengers.
